We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Like any good songs I think the lyrics are open to multiple interpretations, but for me the song reminds me of those beautiful summer evenings getting to know someone, hoping they feel the same way about you, but feeling like you could live in those moments forever. Without question an amazing song, hopefully a single as well.

    My Interpretation

I couldn't help but chuckle to myself when someone claimed it's about having a dog. Each to their own, I suppose!

It's about insecure teenagers being in love.

It's about being scared to say "I love you" as your parents have told you that every day and you want what you say to mean something.

It's about being frustrated because of the insecurity (and inexperience) of of articulating your feelings. The the fear of being misinterpreted, and perhaps, spoiling what is, is too much to risk.

It's about enjoying the moment with that special person, and enjoying their presence without the need to talk. You're free to imagine happy places with them, and so long as they are next to you, it could even come true.

It's about growing up and finding things out for yourself - ie making mistakes, before you're too old.

A beautiful song, which sums up the innocence of young, and/or naive love,

To me this song is all about someone telling a girl that he loves her. hes then just asking if she feels the same way about her. It's all in this one line, "'Would you lie with me, and just forget the world." He just wants to be with her and have her in his arms. He loves her and even though he says it, it isn't enough to show how he feel about her

On the snow patrol thing this morning that i watched, gary said his father used to tell him chasing girls was like chasing cars, he wouldn't know what to do if he got one - i think anyway, still a really beautiful song

This song makes me feel so sad. I think it's about loving someone so intensly, you really can't live without them. Not being certain if they feel the same way about you.I love the lyrics theyre so powerful, and the fact that he says them slowly and clearly helps you make sense out of them.

When asked about his favorite song, Gary replied

"chasing cars. just did the vocals for that this morning. the vocals have been refined and i think it's the purist love song i've written. no tinges of darkness or misery, just totally up lifting. - garyL"

Reminds me of my friends. Good friends will just sit with you and do nothing, will cheer you up, will love you forever.

Chasing cars reminds me of "Trainspotting"--it's just doing nothing. Like what kids do when they hang out together.

Idealized love, that's what I hear. This song seems to be the beautiful side of ignoring reality through love, whereas the next song, Shut Your Eyes, seems to be about the dangerous side. Track 4 leads to track 5 and it is eventually revealed that this is a naive state of mind. For however good it feels in the moment, it's a set-up for disaster.

The theme of the album shows up in the line, "Here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see". It's not shut your eyes, but it is some form of blindness.

There is also the matter of lying down on the ground, which appears in this song, Set the Fire to the Third Bar, and Warmer Climate. For some reason, I picture this song as a couple with their backs to the ground, staring up at the stars. It would stand to reason that the ground could represent reality, as they would have their backs to reality in this song, later to be faced as "cold" reality and "warm" reality in the other songs, respectively.

I can't get used to the title, though, it just doesn't seem like the heart of the song to me. The explanation, "he wouldn't know what to do if he caught one" makes sense, but I still don't like it.

Great song though, I can't pick on it too much. This is simply a great album.

Ave Grave Thee More Shallows So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation. Corpse I Fell In Love With Gadjits, The He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could. when rules change Life in Your Way High life Standing On The Edge Of Summer Thursday In regards to the meaning of this song:Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul. Holiday Bee Gees @[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
