About pasta chips
I shared the pasta chips recipe 3 years ago and now Tik Tok’s latest trend is air fryer pasta chips! I knew it coming! haha! You don’t want to miss this latest trend. Get creative with your pasta and make something exceptionally unique. This crispy crunchy snack has two of your favorite foods – pasta and chips! Hot chips made of pasta are great winter snacks and if you are looking for ideas for unique game day snacks this will be just perfect.
A fun finger food that is great for scooping out some spicy marinara sauce or cheesy Alfredo sauce. The Crispy Pasta Snack recipe is easy to make and needs very minimal ingredients, with flavors that will knock you off! Boiled pasta is deep fried in olive and seasoned with garlic, cayenne, pepper, and salt with Parmesan sprinkled on top to finish off the chips.
Try these chips with a cold beer. You’re welcome!
Fried pasta may sound a little strange to some, some might even call me crazy to try something like fried bow tie pasta, but you’ll never know how amazing this fried pasta is until you try. These are amazing!
Ingredients
Here’s what you need-
- 1lbbowtie pasta or any pasta of your choice
- Olive oil for deep frying (check below for air fryer method)
- ¼cupParmesan cheesegrated
- 1 ½teaspoonred chili powder or cayenne pepper
- 2teaspoongarlic powder
- 1teaspoonground pepper
- Salt to taste
How to make crispy pasta chips (deep fried method)
- You can use fresh cooked pasta or leftover pasta to make these chips. I prefer bow tie (farfalle) pasta to make chips as it looks very pretty and also crisp evenly when deep fried.
- Bring a large pot of water to boil. Add a generous amount of salt and 2 teaspoons of olive oil to boiling water. Add pasta to boiling water, and cook it very al-dente.
- Drain pasta from boiling water. Immediately spread it on a couple of kitchen paper towels to dry it out. IMPORTANT: Make sure to dry the cooked pasta completely. If pasta is not dry, water in pasta will cause a spattering of oil when deep fried.
- Have the seasoning ready before. In a small bowl combine salt, ground pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, and a little Parmesan cheese on top to finish off.
- Olive oil was used to fry pasta in this recipe. Olive Pomace oil, extra virgin olive oil, or vegetable oil can be used.
- Heat oil in a deep pan. Once the oil is hot, deep-fry the pasta, till it turns golden brown.
- Drain pasta from the oil into a large bowl. Add seasoning to it immediately.
- Toss well and serve.
While chips made of pasta are amazing on their own, we love it with some dipping sauce. Spicy marinara sauce, cheese-y Alfredo sauce, and penne vodka dipping sauce are some dipping sauce options you can use.
How to make it in air fryer
- Cook pasta of your choice very al-dente in salted boiling water.
- While the pasta cooks, make the seasoning. Combine salt, ground pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, and parmesan cheese.
- Drain pasta into a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil over cooked pasta.
- Add seasoning mix to pasta and toss.
- Air fryer at 400F for 10-12 minutes, tossing pasta in the basket a few times in between.
- Remove from the air fryer and let it cool for a few minutes.
- Serve with any dipping sauce. We love spicy marinara sauce and cheesy alfredo sauce for dipping.
Expert tips
- Cook pasta very al-dente as you will cook it further while frying it in oil or air fryer.
- Fry pasta in batches (both deep fryer and air fryer method). Do not overcrowd while frying. It can prevent pasta from turning perfectly crispy.
- If you are deep frying in oil use olive oil like olive Pomace oil or extra virgin olive oil. Vegetable oil like canola oil or sunflower oil will work too.
- Change up the seasoning according to your taste. Add any extra spices that you like – onion powder, dry herb seasoning.
- The trick to perfectly crispy chips made of pasta in the air fryer is to use less oil. 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil is all you need.
FAQS
What is the best pasta to use?
You can use any type of pasta. I prefer bow tie (farfalle) pasta to make chips as it looks very pretty and also crisp evenly when deep fried. Some other popular options are – penne, rigatoni, lasagna, fusilli pasta.
Can I make it in the oven?
If you don’t want to deep fry and don’t own an air fryer, you can bake in the oven. Bake cooked, pat dried pasta in a preheated oven at 400F for 20 to 25 minutes or until crispy. Baked pasta can’t be compared to air fryer chips or deep-fried chips.
Seasoning variations
Fried pasta seasoned with just salt – simple but amazing.
Salt and pepper seasoning – So good!
Salt, pepper, cayenne, garlic powder – an extra boost of flavors with a kick!
Salt, garlic powder, ginger powder – Asian-inspired seasoning. Don’t forget to sprinkle some sesame seeds here.
Salt, pepper, mixed dry herbs – Italian seasoning. Familiar flavors with pasta that always work.
Why is the crispy pasta hard?
If pasta is not cooked first before frying, the texture won’t be right. You’ll end up with too crunchy chips that are hard to bite. Always cook pasta al-dente then fry it.

Ingredients
- 1 lb bowtie pasta
- Olive oil for deep frying
- ¼ cup Parmesan cheese grated
- 1 ½ teaspoon red chili powder or cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground pepper
- 2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt to taste
Instructions
Deep fried method
Cook pasta until al-dente or use left over pasta to make these chips. I prefer bow tie (farfalle) pasta to make chips as it looks very pretty and also crisp evenly when deep fried.
Bring a large pot of water to boil. Add a generous amount of salt and 2 teaspoons of olive oil to boiling water. Add pasta to boiling water, and cook it very al-dente.
Drain pasta from boiling water. Immediately spread it on a couple of kitchen paper towels to dry it out. IMPORTANT: Make sure to dry the cooked pasta well. If pasta is dry, water in pasta will cause a spattering of oil when deep fried.
Olive oil was used to fry pasta in this recipe. Olive Pomace oil, extra virgin olive oil, or vegetable oil should work.
Heat oil in a deep pan. Once the oil is hot, deep-fry the pasta, till it turns golden brown.
While pasta is frying, make the seasoning. In a small bowl combine salt, ground pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, and a little Parmesan cheese on top to finish off.
Drain pasta from the oil into a large bowl.
Add seasoning to it immediately. Toss well and serve.
Air fryer method
Cook pasta of your choice very al-dente in salted boiling water.
While the pasta cooks make the seasoning. Combine salt, ground pepper, cayenne, garlic powdered and parmesan cheese.
Drain pasta into a bowl. Add 2 to 3 teaspoon olive oil over cooked pasta.
Add seasoning mix to pasta. Toss well.
Air fryer at 400F for 10-12 minutes, tossing pasta in the basket a few times in between.
Remove from the air fryer and let it cool for a few minutes.
Serve with any dipping sauce. We love spicy marinara sauce, cheesy alfredo sauce, and penne vodka dipping sauce.
Notes
- Cook pasta very al-dente as you will cook it further while frying it in oil or air fryer.
- Test a small batch of cooked (well-drained) pasta in a deep frying pan. If you drain well it should work just fine, pasta will fry well.
- If you find pasta to stick together, toss the cooked pasta in plain flour, and then deep fry it, your pasta should crisp up beautifully.
- The trick to perfectly crisp chips in the air fryer is to use less oil. 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil is all you need.

Made these (except with rigatoni) into honey BBQ Fritos. The first time i followed a different recipe and didn’t boil them but just left them in hot water for 30 mins. It didn’t work out so well as the pasta ended up being too crunchy. This time, i boiled them according to this recipe and they are noticeably better.Reply

I’m glad you liked the recipe. Yes I have tested both with boiled pasta (cooked pasta) and uncooked pasta multiple times. I found boiled pasta gives you better and edible pasta chips 😀
